Small Stream Salmon Fishing Report 10/18/13

Finally we got the rain we have been waiting for. The small streams have water and are fishing very well. The Sandy’s have plenty of water and lots of fish. Grindstone is also fishing well with good numbers of fish in it. My friend Shawn sent me a video of the Little Salmon River yesterday and it was LOADED with fish.

If you have been waiting to fish the smaller waters of Oswego and Jefferson County the time is NOW!!! There is more rain in the forecast so the fishing should stay good. If the water does drop remember to drop down in leader and weight size. Also stay back and fish the deeper pools.

If you have been waiting for  steelhead the Salmon River is the place to be. There have been more and more caught each day. The lower half of the river will be your best bet. If you want to get away from the crowd spend the $50 and fish the Douglaston Salmon Run. It seems like a lot of money to fish for the day but believe me it’s worth it. If you break it down by the hour it’s less than $6 an hour to fish a beautiful stretch of the river.

This can be a great time to swing streamers on a sink tip if you are fly fishing. If you are spin or pin fishing Salmon Skein or egg sacs are your best bet. Good luck and C U on the water.

Sandy Pond Ice Fishing Report 1/8/13

Sandy pond has ice and people are fishing off the Wigwam, Elms, and Green Point. The ice is not consistent but most places having 4 to 6 inches of solid ice. There are bad spots so be very careful if you are heading out.

The perch fishing on Sandy Pond has been very slow this year. The low water this fall and lack of dredging in the channel this summer seems to be the problem. The perch were unable to come into Sandy Pond From Lake Ontario as they normally do in the fall. People are still catching fish but no big numbers have been reported. Most people are bring home about 10 to 15 keepers.

The pike fishing on the pond has been ok though. These fish are in the pond all year so the water levels don’t both them. Most people I know have been catching between 3 to 10 pike a day fishing with shinners under tip ups.

Crappie and bluegill fishing off of Green Point has been hit or miss so far. Most people have not been getting good numbers of keepers. They are reporting lots of action just most of it is coming from small fish. There have been a few people that have had good days bring home 20+ keepers.

I am headed to Six Town Pond this morning as I have heard the crappie bite is picking up there and I know ill be able to catch some pike.
