A couple hours at the Douglaston Salmon Run

I had a few free hours this afternoon so I decided to head to the DSR thinking it was the last day my season pass was good. I was wrong it had expired yesterday but summer afternoon rate is only $15 so I bought a pass and headed to the river.

The temperature was about 40 degrees and the wind was gusting somewhere in the 30 mph range. Perfect fishing weather, ok maybe not but I had time to fish so that’s what I was going to do. I chose a 9 foot light action spinning rod and a watermelon FLT spinner.

After fishing the wall hole and having a small trout get off the hook I decided to walk up to the Little Black Hole. I figured I would fish my way back down. Just below the Little Black I hooked a nice 2 pound smallie that I landed. Then in the Glide I connected with a beautiful dime bright steelhead. Both fish slammed the Finger Lakes Tackle spinner and both fought awesome on the light rod I was using.

I continued fishing my way back to the stairs where I stopped to write this report as the sun came back out.

Salmon Fishing Report 9/21/15

Everyone is waiting for the run to turn on and be in full swing. I wish I could report that it was. However, there are fish in the river from top to bottom. More fish and more fishing pressure in the lower half of the river. If you are willing to work for your fish you will catch some. You will also enjoy a few less people on the river than normal for this time of year.

The trick is to get on the river early and pick a spot you believe the fish will be in that morning. If when day light comes the fish are there then game on. If they are not give it an hour or so to make sure they aren’t just down stream of you and headed your way. If they don’t show get in the truck and head to a new spot. Keep moving until you find them. Don’t necessarily follow the crowds. During my trip on Friday we moved to a section of the river that we had to ourselves and we found more than enough fish to keep us busy.

The other option is to hire a drift boat guide that will cover water until you find fish or take you out in mouth of the river at night. I will say as of lately the night fishing still hasn’t been what it should be. I have a feeling by this weekend the run will be on but if it isn’t follow these steps and you will find enough fish to keep you happy.

It is almost here!!! SALMON SEASON 2015

That’s right Salmon Season will be here in just a couple weeks. The DSR is reporting a few very early fish spotted in the river. I have not seen any myself or heard of any being hooked yet. This is normal for mid August.

The lake guys continue to catch some very nice fish down on our end of the lake. Which is a very good sign for our upcoming river season. Captain Chris Yard of Irish Knots Sport Fishing had some very trips this past week and weekend. If you are looking for a lake charter I highly recommend Chris. However if you are looking for a trip this year it may be tough to find a date he has left open. Still well worth giving him a call. His info can be found at http://www.irishknotsfishing.com.

If you are looking for a river trip I do have some prime dates still open however they are filling up fast. If you have a date you want call now. If I am not available I have a great network of guides I work with and I will get you on the water. Most people are wondering how this season will be after the tough season we saw last year. I can’t promise anything but judging by the way the lake is fishing I think it is going to be a good year. Last year at this time the lake guys were having a lot of trouble locating fish and that is not the case this year.

Salmon Season Coming Soon

Now that August is here we aren’t far away. Within the next couple weeks there will be some fish that enter the river. If you are looking for low pressure fishing this is the time to hit the river. There may not be big numbers of fish in the river but there also won’t be very many people fishing for them. The fishing is not consistent enough for most people to plan a trip to the area so you will most likely be fishing with local anglers.

From the end of August through September fishing at night in the river mouth will be hot. This is a very fun way to catch King Salmon. We slow troll the lake shore on the calm nights. If the wind is blowing we anchor and cast just inside the river. The fish are very fresh and fight hard. I have some open night fishing dates left. If you are looking for a chance to relax and still catch big Salmon give me a call.

The month of September I will be concentrating on the Salmon River in Pulaski, New York and the Black River in Dexter, New York. Both these river have excellent runs of big King Salmon year after year. The Salmon River will be both drift boat and wading trips. The Black River will be drift boat trips only.

Come October the focus will be on the smaller streams that fill with Salmon from Lake Ontario. This gives my guests a chance to get away from the crowds of the main river. It also gives them a change of scenery and a chance to learn new water. Most of these trips are fly fishing. If you want to learn how to fly fish for Salmon this is the perfect time to do so. I am more than willing to teach you.

Small Stream Salmon Fishing Report 10/18/13

Finally we got the rain we have been waiting for. The small streams have water and are fishing very well. The Sandy’s have plenty of water and lots of fish. Grindstone is also fishing well with good numbers of fish in it. My friend Shawn sent me a video of the Little Salmon River yesterday and it was LOADED with fish.

If you have been waiting to fish the smaller waters of Oswego and Jefferson County the time is NOW!!! There is more rain in the forecast so the fishing should stay good. If the water does drop remember to drop down in leader and weight size. Also stay back and fish the deeper pools.

If you have been waiting for  steelhead the Salmon River is the place to be. There have been more and more caught each day. The lower half of the river will be your best bet. If you want to get away from the crowd spend the $50 and fish the Douglaston Salmon Run. It seems like a lot of money to fish for the day but believe me it’s worth it. If you break it down by the hour it’s less than $6 an hour to fish a beautiful stretch of the river.

This can be a great time to swing streamers on a sink tip if you are fly fishing. If you are spin or pin fishing Salmon Skein or egg sacs are your best bet. Good luck and C U on the water.

Douglaston Salmon Run

This year I finally decided to fish the Douglaston Salmon Run in Pulaski, New York for the first time. I had always wondered why people would pay to fish there when there are 13 miles of public water to fish on the Salmon River. Then in the fall of 2012 one of my clients, John, offered to pay for me to fish for the day with him and his friends. After one more on the Douglaston Salmon Run I understood what it was all about.
I stopped by the shack and bought my pass. I then drove to meet John at the Black Hole parking lot. He wanted to park there because it was a shorter walk to the Little Black hole where we planned to start fishing. We then walked down stream and found the spot where we wanted to fish. Now it was time to wait until about 7 when it was legal to fish.
We started fishing around 7 and by 8:30 my arms were sore from fighting big fresh kings. I was amazed at the difference in the fish in the DSR. They are so much stronger then when they get further up the river. They are also much more likely to take a fly as they haven’t been abused by all the snaggers. The attitude of the people on the run is much better then some of those up stream.
The big difference between fishing the DSR and farther up the river is the $45 entry fee keeps out most of the rift raft. The rules on the run and the river walkers that make sure they are followed keep a lot of the snaggers away. As will anything there will always be one or two that try to break the rules but normally the river walkers will take care of the. The other big difference is that the fish are very fresh just out of Lake Ontario and fight like no other.
The rules may change over the next few years and the price will probably go up but as of now this is how it is. There is a $45 fee to fish the run. They only allow 300 people on it per day. All trout and Atlantic Salmon must be released. King and Coho can be kept. Any foul hooked fish must be broke off as soon as it is realized that they are foul hooked.
