Walleye fishing starts the first Saturday in May. My first walleye trip starts that Friday night at midnight. The season starts out fishing the Lake Ontario shoreline and tributaries from the Oswego River to the Black River. Where ever the fishing is best is where I will be. These trips are primarily trolling trips pulling stick baits. There are opportunities to cast jigs or jerk baits as well if wanted.
Once the fish move out of these areas I make the switch to Oneida Lake for the summer and fall months. Walleye fishing on Oneida Lake is excellent from May right through November. The trick to Oneida is staying on the fish and changing techniques as necessary. I always keep jigging and trolling rods on the boat ready to deploy whatever technique needed to put fish in the livewell. While Oneida Lake walleye are not as big as the Lake Ontario walleye they are plentiful and delicious.
