Salmon Fishing 10/28/15

Phil has fished with me the past 2 years. The first year was a great trip. We had 2 kings in the boat by 6:30 in the morning and put the 3rd in the boat about 10:30. Last year was not so great. Actually it was horrible. It rained the entire time we were on the river. To make it worse we never landed a fish. We only hooked one fish that turned out to be a very large brown trout that got off just inches from the net.
This year Phil and I debated where to fish when he came up. After looking at our options I told him I felt fishing the evening into the night in the river mouth would be our best bet. Turned out I was right. We started fishing about 4:30 pm and the boat was back on the trailer with a limit of King Salmon in the fish box by 8:30. Phil was obviously a very happy customer. Phil’s fish weighed in at 24,19,and 17 pounds. All very nice Salmon. The only problem he had was that he brought a cooler for Maryland fish to NY. As we say here we measure our fish in pounds not inches.

Salmon Fishing Report 9/21/15

Everyone is waiting for the run to turn on and be in full swing. I wish I could report that it was. However, there are fish in the river from top to bottom. More fish and more fishing pressure in the lower half of the river. If you are willing to work for your fish you will catch some. You will also enjoy a few less people on the river than normal for this time of year.

The trick is to get on the river early and pick a spot you believe the fish will be in that morning. If when day light comes the fish are there then game on. If they are not give it an hour or so to make sure they aren’t just down stream of you and headed your way. If they don’t show get in the truck and head to a new spot. Keep moving until you find them. Don’t necessarily follow the crowds. During my trip on Friday we moved to a section of the river that we had to ourselves and we found more than enough fish to keep us busy.

The other option is to hire a drift boat guide that will cover water until you find fish or take you out in mouth of the river at night. I will say as of lately the night fishing still hasn’t been what it should be. I have a feeling by this weekend the run will be on but if it isn’t follow these steps and you will find enough fish to keep you happy.

8-16-10 Fishing Report

I had the pleasure of taking Jimmy and his nephew Timmy fishing yesterday. We met at All Seasons Sports at 6 am and headed out hoping to catch some bass, rainbow trout, and walleye.

The fishing was slow and it seemed like every time we has the fish figured out the bite would stop. We did manage to put 17 fish in the boat by the end of our trip. The trout eluded us but we did get 2 walleye, a few smallmouth bass, a bluegill and a bunch of perch.

We were fishing from the drift boat and most of on fish came on crawler harnesses or Berkley Flicker Shads.

Salmon season is quickly approaching but if you want to get out and fish an area with the opportunity to catch multiple tasty species give me a call. We can even fly fish. Both casting and trolling flies.

It is almost here!!! SALMON SEASON 2015

That’s right Salmon Season will be here in just a couple weeks. The DSR is reporting a few very early fish spotted in the river. I have not seen any myself or heard of any being hooked yet. This is normal for mid August.

The lake guys continue to catch some very nice fish down on our end of the lake. Which is a very good sign for our upcoming river season. Captain Chris Yard of Irish Knots Sport Fishing had some very trips this past week and weekend. If you are looking for a lake charter I highly recommend Chris. However if you are looking for a trip this year it may be tough to find a date he has left open. Still well worth giving him a call. His info can be found at http://www.irishknotsfishing.com.

If you are looking for a river trip I do have some prime dates still open however they are filling up fast. If you have a date you want call now. If I am not available I have a great network of guides I work with and I will get you on the water. Most people are wondering how this season will be after the tough season we saw last year. I can’t promise anything but judging by the way the lake is fishing I think it is going to be a good year. Last year at this time the lake guys were having a lot of trouble locating fish and that is not the case this year.

Salmon River Report 3/14/15

I had the pleasure of fishing with Joe and Natalie today from Altmar to Pinneville. We started at the Schoolhouse pool where were Natalie caught here first ever steelhead a nice 9 pounder that put up a good fight. Joe also hook into a very good fish that would have been his first ever fish on the centerpin if it hadn’t made a hard run right at the boat and broke off.

Overall the fishing was slow today. We hooked five and only brought the one to the net. Most people we talked to on the way down had little or no luck. This time of year can be very hit or miss. The fish are in prespawn mood and the bite is either on or off. Today was mostly off. Actually all of our hook ups came at our first stop. We tried almost everything, beads, sacks, jigs, plastics, and plugs. The best bait was plastics today.

In another week or two the fishing will really heat up as the fish spawn and head back to the lake. Looking at the snow pack along the river and up on the hill we are going to have high water right into May again this year. I am going to offer Walleye and Steelhead combo trips the first week of May. Walleye at night and steelhead during the day. Call for details.

Salmon River Fishing Report 2/20/15

The extreme cold weather we have been having has most of the river iced or slushed up. The only section that is fishable is from Altmar to Pineville. The weather is supposed to improve the next two days which should lead to more fishing pressure. However the snow will keep some away.

If you are planning on fishing this weekend I would bring some snowshoes and get away from the parking lots. There is plenty of good water that is not going to be easy to get to. The best way would be by drift boat but if that is not an option snowshoes will get you there. Hiking into the north side of the trestle would be a good bet for sure.

You best bet for baits will be single beads in natural colors or small egg patterns. Egg sacks will also be a good bet in white, pink, or blue. The water has been low and clear. We may get a little run off if temps go above freezing this weekend but it won’t be substantial. Lighter leaders will help also. I would recommend 6 pound fluorocarbon.

Salmon River Report 1/1/15

I didn’t fish today but I did take a ride around the upper half of the river after having an amazing brunch at the Tailwater Lodge. There were not many people on the river but those who were did well. There is a good amount of snow in Altmar and it didn’t look like people were traveling far from the parking lots.

Fish were being caught on both egg sacs and beads. The drift boats were also getting fish on plugs. With more snow in the forecast walking won’t get any easier. This is an excellent time of year to hire a guide with a heated drift boat.

Reno Fly Shop

This review is very late as it was mid August when I had the pleasure of visiting the Reno Fly Shop. I figured late is better than never and I must share my experience with this awesome fly shop.

The Reno Fly Shop is located right in Reno, Nevada. It is walking distance from the Truckee River. The guys that run this shop are great. I was headed to Reno to visit some of my wive’s family so I of course googled fly shops in Reno, Nevada. It turns out there is only one and it is the Reno Fly Shop. Looking at the map I could see it was walking distance from Circus Circus where we were staying so I put it on my must do list.

Our first day in Reno my wife, son, and I went for a walk around. After checking out a few shops we made our way to the Reno Fly Shop. As I walked in I could tell I was going to like the place. We were immediately greeted by one of the owners. (I am horrible with names.) We told them we were in town visiting family and I was interested in fishing for at least one morning while I was in town. We talked about fishing in New York and Nevada for a bit.

I asked about hiring a guide as I knew I wouldn’t have a lot of time to fish and wanted to make the best of my time. They told me that if guided back home I probably didn’t really need a guide there. They would rent me the equipment and point me in the right direction. This was a shock to me as most places want to get as much money out of you as possible.

I came back a few days later to rent a fly rod for the next day. The basic set up was $20 a day. That included fly rod and reel, a hip pack, leader, tippet material, fly floatant, and basic tools. All I needed to buy was some flies. They picked out a half dozen flies that would work, gave me directions to a good section of the river, and told me how to fish it. I couldn’t wait for the next morning.

The next morning my wife, son and I arrived at the river around 7 am. I was going to fish and she was going to go for a run through the park with our son. I rigged up the fly rod and headed to the river. On my first cast the dropper became snagged on a rock and when it came loose the line tangled on the end of the rod. I placed the reel on the rock next to me as I made my way up to the tangle on the end of the rod. As I untangled the line the reel fell off the rock leaving me holding just the last 8 inches of the rod. You can probably guess what happened at that point. The rod snapped in my hand. I couldn’t believe it. I sent a text to my wife and headed to the car.

After breakfast we headed back to the shop to tell them what had happened. I had full intentions on paying for the rod I had broke. When I told them what happened they told me not to worry about it it was covered under warranty and they would just send it back. Not only did they not charge me for the next days rental because I didn’t get to fish that day but they wouldn’t let me even pay the shipping to send the rod back. These guys are fisherman and understand that things happen. Of course this caused me to spend extra money in the shop on clothing and a fly box that I have been using this salmon season and am very glad I bought.

The next day I did get to fish the Truckee River which is a beautiful river. I didn’t land any fish that morning but I didn’t hook into a very large trout that go off after making a down stream run around a very large boulder.

If you are ever in Reno I highly recommend that you stop in the Reno Fly Shop. Even if you don’t have time to fish while you are there I am guessing you will at least want a tee shirt as they have a great logo.  If you are planning to fish while you are in town this is a must stop before you fish as they guys really know there stuff. There is no doubt in my mind that your day on the water will be better if you stop in the shop the day before.

The Salmon Run is finally here

If you have been fishing the Salmon River or just reading reports you know it has been a strange and tough year. After a couple years of earlier than normal runs we have been spoiled. There have been fish in the river all September just not in the large numbers of years past. Many anglers have had trouble figuring out what needed to be done to catch fish in these conditions. Even guides fishing almost every day have been finding the fishing tough. The trick has been to keep moving and cover lots of water. Standing in one spot all day was not going to get it done.

The cold weather and rain we have received over the last few days has help. The fishing has improved daily. The mid and upper Salmon River have been fishing well. Plugs being pulled from drift boats and cast by shore anglers have been producing fish. Also estaz eggs and woolly buggers have been a good bet.

The rain should start bringing the water levels of the small streams up. As of right now most of them still do not have enough water to fish well or even bring the fish into them. There is more rain in the forecast and it is raining as I write this. I will have a better small water report after my guide trip Thursday.

The Black River has fish but not a lot of them. They are doing work on the power generation dams in Dexter so there is no flow coming from them. The water flow is only coming from the over flow dams. This is changing where the fish would normally hold a little bit. There is also not a lot of water running right now.

The Oswego River has picked up over the last few days with good numbers of salmon being caught.

Salmon Season Coming Soon

Now that August is here we aren’t far away. Within the next couple weeks there will be some fish that enter the river. If you are looking for low pressure fishing this is the time to hit the river. There may not be big numbers of fish in the river but there also won’t be very many people fishing for them. The fishing is not consistent enough for most people to plan a trip to the area so you will most likely be fishing with local anglers.

From the end of August through September fishing at night in the river mouth will be hot. This is a very fun way to catch King Salmon. We slow troll the lake shore on the calm nights. If the wind is blowing we anchor and cast just inside the river. The fish are very fresh and fight hard. I have some open night fishing dates left. If you are looking for a chance to relax and still catch big Salmon give me a call.

The month of September I will be concentrating on the Salmon River in Pulaski, New York and the Black River in Dexter, New York. Both these river have excellent runs of big King Salmon year after year. The Salmon River will be both drift boat and wading trips. The Black River will be drift boat trips only.

Come October the focus will be on the smaller streams that fill with Salmon from Lake Ontario. This gives my guests a chance to get away from the crowds of the main river. It also gives them a change of scenery and a chance to learn new water. Most of these trips are fly fishing. If you want to learn how to fly fish for Salmon this is the perfect time to do so. I am more than willing to teach you.
